1. Purpose of the Language Appendix
The purpose of this appendix is to provide guidance on specific issues for localization not covered in the
general guidelines due to their language-specific nature. You must use this appendix in combination
with the General section of the Style Guide. While the General section provides instructions on how to
achieve comparable stylistic consistency across all languages, this Language Appendix aims to establish
consistency for all content translated into your specific language.
2. ASIN-localization instructions
Compliance
Language barrier: In case you are required to insert a language warning, the suggested phrasing for
each particular case is as follows:
▪ for diaries, apps, instructions and similar (unless the language is clearly stated):
“(ಕನ್ನ ಡ ಭಾಷೆ ಖಾತರಿಯಿಲ್ಲ )”;
▪ for games, trading cards, travel gift vouchers (e.g. Smartbox) and similar: “(“US
ಆವೃತ್ತಿ ”, “UK ಆವೃತ್ತಿ ”, etc.)”;
Customisation: If product customisation options are to be removed, the suggested term to add in the
product title is “ಗ್ರಾ ಹಕೀಕರಣ”.
Regional variety
Use standard spelling and grammar. Avoid slang and be careful with colloquialisms. Use terms that
are widely understood across the state/region.
Addressing the customer
Use the polite form of second (ನೀವು instead of ನೀ/ನೀನು) and third person pronoun when referring
to the client.
Style
Language should be natural and conversational. Use modern, easily comprehensible words and
sentence structures. Always consider the intent of the text and use simple words that are widely
understood by a cross section of customers in the respective state/region. This may include some
English words and phrases since they have come to be widely used in everyday conversation among
regional language speakers. These should all be phonetically transliterated into the target language.

However, avoid excessive use of transliterated English terms.
Translate or transliterate
This is a major decision for translators to make in technical domains. Do not translate domain
specific terminology (modem, software, server, E-Mail, infrared, wireless, broadcast, and headset
etc.), technology types (Java, Multimedia) and proper names. Terms like file, folder, profile, call,
phone, settings, shortcut, operator, menu, media, gallery, card, video, clip etc. that are widely
used in local languages in their adopted form are always transliterated.
Don’t translate/transliterate serial numbers in product titles (e.g. Philips SBCHL140 On- Ear
Headphones (Grey))
Product Inscription: Words, phrases or quotes inscribed on the product must not be translated or
transliterated. E.g. Slogan on a coffee mug/t-shirt: “World’s Best Dad” must be left untranslated in
the target.
Brand names, model names, model numbers, product codes: must NOT be transliterated or
translated. They must appear in the translated Kannada output as in the English source (in Latin
alphabet) unless an approved translated form is available or you have been explicitly instructed
otherwise.
Numbers
Please use English numerals (1, 2, 3, 4 … 1000 etc.) consistently in your translation.
Follow the English conventions for decimals (e.g. $10.05, INR 449.99) and thousand separators (e.g.
10,000; 100,000).
Measurements
In measurements, change “*” to “x” for clarity (e.g. “2*11 cm” “2 x 11 cm”).
Please retain the measurement units given in the source. Do not convert measurement units.
Include a space between number and unit of measurement, e.g. “24 cm” not “24cm”.
Brands, copyright, and trademark
Do not translate or transliterate brand names and trademarks unless an approved translated form is
available or you have been explicitly instructed otherwise.
Hyperlinks
If you encounter hyperlinks in the source, copy them in the right place in the target. Do not
translate/transliterate hyperlinks.
