The Three Basic Arabic Vowels
SHORT VOWELS are found as markers on the letters:
the Dam-ma
the kassra ب ب بthe fatHa
ِ ُ َ
short “i” short “o” short “u”
as in “bib” as in “book” as in “bud”
LONG VOWELS are full letters that follow other letters:
the letter ﻲﺑ وﺑ ﺎﺑ the letter
yaa alef
the letter wow
long “i” long “o” long “a” as in
as in “beak” as in “booth” “bath”*
*Or “aw” sound as in “soft” if preceded by the letters:
ﺎﺻ ﺻﺎ ﺿﺎ ﻗﺎ طﺎ ظﺎ
