Lesson 6 (Towns, Traders And Craftsmen)
Summary of the chapter
Growth of towns was a distinctive feature of the mediaeval
period. Sometimes towns developed out of a large village
which had a wholesale market or where occasional or weekly
markets or fairs were held. Trade took place in towns as it
became a common place for merchants who were buyers and
sellers. There were different types of towns like capital towns,
religious towns, etc. Important towns like Hampi, Surat and
Machilipatnam developed as important trade centres.
Europeans came to the Indian subcontinent in search of spices
and other products in the 15th century.
