Introduction
Traditionally, English teachers in Macau always focus on teaching
vocabulary and grammar structures. Students are mainly trained on memorization
rather than utilization. However, a teacher’s role is not only a knowledge transmitter
but also a facilitator. Nowadays, the Internet has become a core element in our daily
life. Students can easily receive different messages or knowledge from the Internet. It
is not necessary for them to listen to the teachers’ preaching in the classroom if the
teachers are just training them on memorization. Due to the rapid development of the
Internet, we believe that the Flipped Classroom Approach is one of the most popular
trends in education that we can utilize to motivate our students to learn how to learn.
We have designed a module which includes listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Throughout the introduction of this topic, we also reinforce the importance of healthy
eating habits to students.
In this module, we encourage our students to learn spontaneously with the
Flipped Classroom Approach. We have assigned our students assignments to read and
listen to online articles before class. This helps them to discover what they know and
what they don’t. This enables them to have an idea of what they are going to learn, and
they can polish on what they need to work on. It leads to a better learning outcome
since the students are more motivated.
To align with our school’s objective of being a leading technology-oriented
teaching institution, we use computers as our primary tools. We also use a computer
software called “DyKnow” as the major teaching aids in class. We have designed
some online games for our students to learn the vocabularies by themselves, which can
make sure that everyone take part in the activity.
Group discussion is also a major element of this module. We encourage our
students to discuss in English and create a PowerPoint for their presentation after the
discussion. The students are trained to co-operate with each other as well as to speak
in front of the class in English.
