Communication and consultation skills Preparing for your learning club event
About this CPPE local solutions resource
The changing world of pharmacy and the extended role of the pharmacist and
pharmacy technician means that pharmacy technicians are spending more time than
ever conducting patient consultations, whether it be during discharge counselling,
medicines reconciliation, a request for an over-the-counter (OTC) product and health
promotion advice, or, for example, when running a specialist service for patients, such
as smoking cessation or weight management.
Good communication skills are vital to delivering an effective consultation and
contribute to achieving better outcomes for patients. You are about to take part in
training to help you assess your own communication skills and identify your strengths,
as well as the areas in which you can develop, to make sure you deliver quality
consultations which are effective for the patient and for you.
There are two parts to this CPPE local solutions resource:
1. This Preparing for your learning club event booklet which includes reading, self-
refl ection and activities that you need to complete before you attend the workshop
2. The workshop itself, which is focused on the knowledge, skills and behaviours
which will help you to develop your consultation skills.
This booklet gets you started. It provides key information to help you meet the
learning objectives presented overleaf, but it also encourages you to identify your
own learning needs. It then challenges you to relate what you have learned to your
own area of practice and professional development. We have included exercises to
stimulate your thinking and we will refer to these again at the workshop. Make sure
you have completed these activities before attending the event.
We estimate it will take you up to three hours to complete Tasks 1 to 3 in this
booklet.
At the workshop you will also be provided with a Learning portfolio which you can use
to make relevant notes during the session, providing you with a useful reminder of
your learning and to help you complete CPD entries, as appropriate.
