Five Math Strands:
Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, Statistical Analysis and Probability,
Numbers & Operations
Each month we will have a math project that focuses on one of the 5 strands of
mathematics. The focus in February will be Algebra. Below is a list of required
elements for this project.
I do not expect parents to teach this information. My expectation is that the
student will answer their own questions about this project by: Listening in
class, asking Mr. Vaughan questions during the school day and/or researching
out the answer on their own.
List of required Student Work:
1. The student will create a 20 question Algebra math test with at least one
problem from each category listed below.
2. The student will create an answer key and work needs to be shown to
prove answers.
3. Give the Algebra test to someone.
4. Correct the test
5. If errors occurred in the test discover why they happened.
List of Required student work:
Translate simple word statements into algebraic equations. (+,-,x,/)
A number increased by ten is equal to 50. (x+10=50)
Read and use symbols of “<,” “>,” and “=” to express relationships. Fill in the
blank w/ <, >, or =.

Use the following properties in evaluating numerical expressions: commutative,
associative, identity, zero, inverse, and distributive.
Commutative- For two numbers. 2x3 = 3x2
Associative- For three numbers. 2(3x4) = (2x3)4
Identity- Any number multiplied by one remains its own identity. 3x1 = 3
Zero- Any number times zero(0) equals zero. 4x0 = 0
Distributive- multiplying the sum is the same as multiplying by both
addends. 4 * (6 + 3) = 4*6 + 4*3 ; y+y+y= 3y ; 24x +18y = 6(4x=3y)
Evaluate simple algebraic expressions using substitution.

Solve one-step equations with whole numbers.

Use patterns to represent and solve simple problems.
It takes 1 gallon of paint for one side of a building, 2 gallons of paint for two sides of a
building, and 3 gallons of paint for three sides of a building. How many gallons will it
take to paint a building w/ 8 sides?
