               Course Description: This is the first of a sequence of courses that present a unified treatment of the 
               differential and integral calculus. Topics include: limits, continuity, differentiation and integration, 
               applications of the derivative and the integral. 
                
               Course Objectives: The student will be able to: 
                   •  Demonstrate their understanding of the definitions of limits and continuity 
                   •  Perform computations of limits and determine the continuity 
                   •  Evaluate derivatives using differentiation rules and the Chain Rule 
                   •  Apply derivatives to find extreme values and sketch graphs of functions  
                   •  Apply derivatives to solve problems of related rates  
                   •  Evaluate indefinite integrals and definite integrals using integration formulas and properties 
                   •  Evaluate indefinite integrals and definite integrals using the substitution method 
                   •  Understand the definition of definite integrals and apply definite integrals to solve area problems

               Assessment of student performance is based on: 
                              Three exams during the semester                                           100 points each 
                              MyMathLab Homework                                        75 points 
                              Quizzes                                                   75 points 
                                       Comprehensive final examination                                         150 points. 
                
      Grading Policy: Grades will be assigned based on the percentage of points earned. A student earning 
      90-100% of the total points will receive a course grade of an A, 80-89% a B, 70-79% a C, 60-69% a D 
      and below 60% an F. 
       
      Homework policy: All homework will be done on the MyMathLab web-based application.  Normally, a 
      new homework assignment will be made after each class.  It is the student’s responsibility to log on to 
      MyMathLab and keep up with all assigned work.  
       
      Quizzes: Quizzes will occur most Fridays during recitation. 
       
      Exam Policies: Calculators, phones, watches, or other internet-capable devices will not be allowed or 
      needed on quizzes and tests. In the event that a student has a valid, documented reason for missing an 
      exam, the student may petition for a make-up exam or other relief to be determined by the instructor on 
      an individual basis.   
       
      Calculator Policy: No calculators may be used on quizzes or exams. 
       
      Cell phone policy: Cell phones should be set to “silent” or “vibrate” mode during class.  On the rare 
      occasion that you anticipate the possibility of an emergent situation (but no emergent that it causes you 
      to miss class) requiring you to remain in contact with someone via your phone, you may sit near the 
      door, quietly monitor your phone, and answer your call in the hallway, making sure your departure 
      causes as little disruption as possible.  This scenario is to be considered an exceptional situation, and not 
      the general rule. 
       
      Under no circumstances may your cellular or other communication device be visible to yourself or 
      others (including the instructor) during a quiz or test.  If the instructor can see your cell phone, this will 
      be considered evidence of cheating and dealt with in accordance with GSU’s academic dishonesty 
      policy.  If you need to leave the classroom to use the restroom during an exam or quiz, you must leave 
      your mobile communication devices in the care of the instructor. 
       
      Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend each class meeting and pay attention but attendance 
      will not be taken. A student who misses class is responsible to find out what was discussed and learn the 
      material that was covered on the missed day. The instructor is not responsible for re-teaching material 
      missed by a student who did not attend class. 
       
      Academic Dishonesty Policy: Any student who exhibits academic dishonesty in any form will receive a 
      failing grade (F) for the entire course and will be reported to the University Judicial Officer. For more
