Scope and contents note
There are three series of Bernie Joyce’s Keilor research papers: information papers,
photographs, and maps and plans. The information papers cover excursions,
correspondence, notes and reports. They are in rough chronological order.

September 2016.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Associate Professor Edmund Bernard Joyce (b.1934, known as Bernie Joyce) is an
Australian geologist who began researching the geology and geomorphology of the
Aboriginal archaeology sites of the Keilor Terraces and the Maribyrnong River Valley in the
1970s. Located approximately 16 kilometres north-west of the city of Melbourne, the Keilor
and Maribyrnong River sites are among the most important Aboriginal prehistory locations in
Australia, having provided some of the earliest proof of the length of Aboriginal occupation in
Australia, with evidence of human activity over 30,000 years ago.
The 1960s and 1970s saw significant growth in the knowledge and understanding of the
Aboriginal prehistory of the Keilor and Maribyrnong River sites, with Joyce’s work making an
important contribution. He focussed in particular on the Dry Creek site, publishing with RS
Anderson in The Artefact in 1976 the ‘Late Quaternary geology and environment at the Dry
Creek archaeological site near Keilor in Victoria, Australia’. Joyce’s ‘Terraces on the
Maribyrnong River at Keilor’, formed part of the Geological Society of Australia volume on the
geology of Victoria, and he contributed conference papers and notes on the Keilor and
