Bathing Water Directive
• Article 3.9 of the Bathing Water Directive states that
Member States shall ensure that the analysis of
bathing water quality takes place in accordance with
the reference methods specified in Annex I and the
rules set out in Annex V.
Example alternative method:
ISO 9308-2
• Annex I refers to ISO 9308-1 / ISO9308-3
for Escherichia coli (E. coli)
(for inland, coastal and
transitional waters)
• To be verified in Labs in the MS

Other Alternative methods
In the light of Article 3.9 of the Bathing Water
Directive, the Commission recalls that:
• Member States that permit the use of other
equivalent methods or rules shall provide the
Commission with all relevant information about
the methods or rules and their equivalence
