A reference is a person that employers can contact to

How to Find the Ideal Reference
The ideal reference will be able to speak specifically
about your abilities and strengths and will
provide examples of your work and/or character.
You’ll want to consider selecting people who know you
and your work quite well, as opposed to picking people
you consider to have important job titles.
What if I don't have any previous work experience?
First time job seekers are not able to provide a professional
reference because they haven't worked before. In this case, they
will use personal references.
In general, anyone who can vouch for your work ethic, reliability,
and your ability to achieve in an employment or academic setting
can give you a personal reference.
Don't forget: Babysitting, paper routes, snow removal or summer
yard maintenance are all examples of previous work.
